Why DontRot exists: screen time you earn

Every app on your phone is free to open. That single design decision — zero cost, infinite retries — is why so many of us lose hours a day to feeds we don’t even enjoy. DontRot exists to change the price.

Screen time as a currency

DontRot blocks the apps you choose and makes you pay for them with something real: your steps, your workouts, your focus. Every 100 steps becomes one minute of screen time. A set of camera-counted push-ups, a meditation session, a chapter read — everything has an exchange rate, and the wallet is your own body.

This flips the incentive structure of your phone. Scrolling stops being the default state and becomes a small, deliberate purchase. You still get your feed — you just arrive at it the way you arrive at dessert: after dinner, and enjoying it more because of it.

Why walking is automatic

Every other activity in DontRot has a start button. Walking doesn’t, on purpose. Steps count 24/7, even with the app closed, because walking is the one healthy behavior almost everyone already does — we just make it visible and make it pay. Your commute was always worth something. Now it’s worth minutes.

Designed for streaks, not guilt

Blockers usually fail in one of two ways: they’re so strict you uninstall them, or so soft you ignore them. We spend most of our design time in that gap. Goals come with rest days. Surplus minutes can be banked for busier days. And if you want to tune how hard the game is, you pick between three honesty-preserving levels instead of typing your own numbers — because a currency you can print at will stops being a currency.

DontRot is free on Android, and this blog is where we’ll publish the studies, experiments and build notes behind it. Life is what happens while you’re not scrolling — see you out there.
